Psychologist had approved Jeffrey Epstein’s removal from suicide watch

Reuters

https://news.yahoo.com/psychologist-approved-jeffreys-epsteins-removal-001926591.html

A psychologist at the federal detention center in New York City where financier Jeffrey Epstein was jailed on sex-trafficking charges had approved his removal from suicide watch before he killed himself, the U.S. Justice Department said on Friday. The disclosure came in a letter dated on Thursday from Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd and addressed to the leaders of the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, seeking details about the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death earlier this month.

The U.S. □ Counting Prison Suicides Even Though the Law Requires It Vice

Jeffrey Epstein’s suicide in a federal prison in lower Manhattan triggered an investigation and the reassignment of two corrections officers, as well as the head of the Federal Bureau of Prisons by Attorney General William Barr. But it also shined a light on a problem: the federal government has no idea how many prisoners take their own lives in federal and state prisons, even though it’s required by law to keep track. The government is obligated under the 2013 Death in Custody Reporting Act to collect and disclose information from law enforcement agencies and states on all deaths in custody, including suicides and deaths during arrest. But that never happened, in part because the Justice Department shuffled the data-collecting responsibility around to different bureaus, causing delays and leaving experts and policymakers with little information on how common prison suicide is.

Video shows MCC inmate using illicit phone for Facebook live broadcast

An inmate awaiting trial on murder and conspiracy charges used a cellphone to broadcast a Facebook Live video from inside the same Manhattan lockup where Jeffery Epstein hanged himself. The Post has learned. The shocking breach of security at the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center occurred last month and is part of a large-scale investigation into the use of cellphones by prisoners there, law-enforcement sources said.

Accused Capital One hacker to remain in jail until trial, judge rules

Washington Post

Magistrate Judge Michelle L. Peterson issued the decision at a hearing in federal court here. Lawyers for Paige A. Thompson had urged that she be sent to a halfway house, arguing that because their client is transgender, she will have a particularly hard time coping in an all-male unit in the federal detention center. “I have severe concerns that if you are released, you will not appear at your next court hearing,” Peterson said, citing the defendant’s “erratic and bizarre behavior, suicide ideation,” and social media posts threatening to kill herself.
